Glenmorangie Distillery Tain

By the tranquil shores of the Dornoch Firth, amidst the golden barley fields of Ross-shire, lies the Glenmorangie Distillery. Here you will find the legendary men of Tain, the skilled craftsmen who ensure that Glenmorangie is made in the same unhurried and uncompromising way it has always been, through its long and distinguished history.
Conscious of the organic waste discharge from the Distillery in Tain, Glenmorangie understood the need for a water quality enhancement strategy, while supporting the marine environment at their site on the banks of the Dornoch Firth.
Glenmorangie Distillery and a team of scientists from Heriot-Watt University have focused on restoring a sustainable native oyster reef in the firth as part of the DEEP project (Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project).
Klargester were contacted by John Campbell Building Surveying Services to specify the Klargester products for the distillery. A free site inspection was carried out by Scott Spence to review and establish a long-term solution to aid the DEEP project enhancement strategy. The site previously had an old septic tank system, however as an environmentally conscious business, Glenmorangie wanted to ensure they met SEPA’s requirements for disposing effluent waste to Dornoch Firth.
Having met with local contractors, installers and the Glenmorangie team, Scott recommended the Klargester BioDisc BM commercial sewage treatment plant to the distillery. The sewage treatment plant is ideal for commercial applications and has a proven track record for high quality performance, superior reliability, and low operational costs. Designed in accordance with EN 12255, the Klargester BioDisc offers silent operation as well as odour free performance.
DEEP began as part of the distillery’s wider sustainability strategy in 2014 with partners from Heriot-Watt University and supported by the Marine Conservation Society with a shared vision to create a sustainable reef of four million native oysters.
The oysters will play a key role in purifying the water which contains organic by-products from the distillery and the local area, with one oyster able to purify up to 200 litres of water a day.
